It is very beneficial for photographers to have and develop diverse skills. When art and graphic elements come together in photography, they can create a pleasant and eye-catching image. Photographers who want to create a good composition must have these five essential skills that painters also have:

  • Perception of edge

  • Perception of space

  • Perception of light and shadow,

  • Perception of the whole

There are seven basic principles of art and design. By incorporating these principles into their creative process, photographers can portray their conceptual ideas with strength and accuracy. What are these seven basic principles?

  • Art: Balance, rhythm, pattern, emphasis, contrast, unity, and movement.

  • Design: Line, shape/form, space, value, colour, and texture.

These principles should be used to create powerful and extraordinary compositions.

Composition is a kind of magic that’s hard to predict and even harder to plan.
— Cartier-Bresson

One of the most important points when creating a composition is to have the perception of edge and space and to place the object in the frame according to these. Another way to build strong composition is to be aware of positive and negative space. In this way, the balance, spaces, and shapes/forms in your photograph can be emphasized.

Vertical and horizontal lines are the most important elements that take the viewer's eyes on a journey in photography. It is possible to direct the gaze of the viewer, like a train track coming to the center of the frame using perspective and centring the object. Or, the spoon which is placed as if pointing to the soup bowl.

Light and shadow can enable you to create excellent graphics in photography. For example, if you place an empty wine bottle in front of the light, you can get a green and textured shadow on the floor. By playing with both light and shadow, you can get two opposite images of the same product.
